If you choose to use the public bus service, you can board a bus bound for Shiratani Unsuikyo at the ‘Ushitoko Koen’ bus stop, which is just 10 minutes’ walk from the Lodge. The ride takes about 20 minutes.
Breakfast and lunch bento (boxed meals) are available. Please order your bento by 8:00 p.m. on the day before your hike. The meals can be delivered to the Lodge as early as 4:00 a.m.
If you get an early start, you can easily complete this hike in a single day.
Getting to the trail entrance is not difficult. If you choose to use the public bus service, you can board a bus at the ‘Oharamachi’ bus stop and ride it to ‘Yakusugi Shizenkan (Museum)’. From there you must take a special shuttle bus to the Arakawa trail entrance. From March through November, access to the trail entrance is restricted to private vehicles, so if you’re driving a car you must park at the Yakusugi Shizenkan (Yakusugi Museum) and take the shuttle bus. The hike from the Arakawa trail entrance to the Jomon cedar tree and back takes 8 to 10 hours.
From December through February there are no shuttle buses to the Arakawa trail entrance. During these three months it is possible to drive to the trail entrance in a rented car.
The easiest access to Mt. Miyanoura is from the Yodogawa trail entrance. To reach the trail entrance, you will need to rent a car and drive yourself or take a taxi. The hike to Mt. Miyanoura and back takes 8 to 10 hours.
